What is TotalFX Laser?
TotalFX is an advanced laser treatment designed to address sun damage, wrinkles, scars, and a wide range of skin concerns. By combining two powerful technologies, ActiveFX and DeepFX, this procedure works on both the upper and lower layers of the skin simultaneously, delivering dramatic, transformative results that smooth, resurface, and rejuvenate.
As a fractional CO2 laser, TotalFX treats only a "fraction" of the skin's surface at a time, leaving surrounding tissue intact. This approach encourages healing, as the untouched skin supports the recovery of treated areas. You may also hear this procedure referred to as laser resurfacing or fractional CO2 laser resurfacing.
ActiveFX targets the superficial layers of skin to correct pigmentation, sun damage, and texture irregularities while stimulating the production of new, healthier skin cells and collagen.
DeepFX penetrates into the deeper layers of the dermis to reduce lines, wrinkles, and acne scars while promoting collagen production and skin tightening.
When used together, these two technologies become the TotalFX treatment. In some cases, a customized approach is used, applying different settings to more delicate areas such as the eyelids, neck, and chest where the skin tends to be thinner.
Who is a Good Candidate for TotalFX?
TotalFX may be the right choice if you are dealing with concerns that go beyond surface-level skin issues. It is particularly well-suited for patients experiencing:
- Sun damage and pigmentation
- Deep wrinkles or fine lines, including crow's feet and upper lip lines
- Acne or burn scars
- Skin laxity or loss of firmness
- Textural irregularities
It is most appropriate for patients who do not have deeply pigmented skin types. It is beneficial to those who have not achieved their desired results with treatments like IPL and other non-ablative treatments. Unlike treatments that require a series of sessions, TotalFX can produce significant improvement in a single procedure.
How Does TotalFX Work?
Prior to the procedure, nerve blocks and oral sedation are administered to ensure comfort throughout the session. During the treatment, the laser creates microscopic columns within the skin tissue, removing damaged layers while leaving surrounding skin intact to facilitate healing. The depth and intensity of treatment are carefully controlled through laser settings tailored to each patient's needs. Depending on the size of the treatment area, sessions typically are 60 minutes or more.
What to Expect After Treatment
Immediately following the procedure, an ointment will be applied to the skin. Patients must bring a designated driver to drive home from their appointment. A follow-up visit is scheduled within a week with specific after-care instructions provided. Most patients should plan for at least one week of downtime. During recovery, the skin may appear pink or red, similar to a sunburn. Visible improvements become apparent as the skin heals, with continued enhancement from collagen remodeling over the following months. Many patients find their results continue to improve for up to three to five months post-treatment.
How Long Do Results Last?
Patients can enjoy a noticeably younger, more refreshed appearance for several years following treatment. As with any cosmetic procedure, results are best maintained by practicing good skin care habits, including consistent sun protection and limiting sun exposure. A healthy lifestyle will also contribute to longer-lasting outcomes. Maintenance habits and treatments such as sun protection, retinoid, and regular Botox can help extend and preserve results over time.
